Keeping city sidewalks clear

Drivers who park illegally in the downtown Guadalajara area will be fined 3,276 pesos in a new campaign launched jointly by the Jalisco Traffic Department (Semov) and municipal authorities this week.

The new regime of fines in the ‘’Banquetas Libres’’ program begins in one week. Meanwhile, a team of 30 officials has been slapping “apercibimientos” (warnings) on vehicles parked illegally.  Guadalajara Mayor Enrique Alfaro handed out the first warning Monday to a vehicle blocking the path of pedestrians on Calle Pedro Moreno.  In total, officers gave out 347 warnings to owners of vehicles that were either parked on yellow lines or in disabled spaces, or blocking sidewalks, business entrances and garages.  Once the program begins in earnest, illegally parked vehicles are likely to be quickly removed to the pound, meaning that drivers will have to pay to recover them, in addition to the heavy fine.
