Uber drivers protest growing insecurity

Fernando Reyna Mendoza was shot to death in the early hours of Friday, October 6 in the Colonia Lomas del Pedregal  neighborhood of the city.  According to witnesses, a man approached his blue Nissan Versa parked on the lateral of Avenida 8 de Julio at the corner of Mezquitera and shot Reyna Mendoza several times through the window. Investigators say the murder was probably motivated by theft.

Monday, Uber cabbies drove their vehicles in convoy from the Minerva glorieta to the city center’s Plaza de Armas.  Many daubed their windscreens with slogans alluding to the current climate of insecurity.

Assaults on Uber drivers have increased since the firm started allowing fares to paid in cash, the protesters said.  The drivers, who covered their license plates to avoid identification, urged their bosses and state authorities to modify the system of cash payments to insist that passengers provide them with an official identification before seeking a ride. They also want passengers to be registered on a database.

Calling for more nightly police patrols, the drivers also demanded quicker response times to calls made to the 066 emergency number.
