Airport disruption continues

A protest march blocking one lane of the Guadalajara-Chapala highway by the city airport caused some passengers to miss flights Thursday morning.

With traffic backed up, some abandoned their vehicles and walked up to a mile with their luggage to make their flights on time.

The protestors from the local Zapote landowners cooperative (ejido) have disrupted operations around the Guadalajara airport for the past month in a bid to force the federal government to pay up for land they say was appropriated from them several decades ago when the facility was built.

Despite several meetings between the warring factions, no agreement has been reached and the ejidatarios have vowed to maintain their protests.

One small blessing is that airport administrators have allowed passengers and visitors to park for free as the blockades continue.
