Facelift for iconic city sculpture

“Los Cubos” (The Cubes), Guadalajara’s emblematic public sculpture that sits on Avenida Lazaro Cardenas at the Vallarta/Mexico intersection, is getting the first makeover in its almost 50-year history.

The geometric sculpture was created by Fernando Gonzalez Gortazar in 1970 and comprises 20 black-and-white blocks arranged in two, tall columns. In addition to much-needed maintenance and a fresh coat of paint, the area around the sculpture will be upgraded, with the installation of modern illumination, new plants and trees, and an irrigation system.

The restoration work coincides with the opening of the city’s new Hard Rock Hotel located just across the cloverleaf from the statue.  The inauguration of the hotel is set for the first week of August. Bookings are currently being taken online.
