Swedish furniture giant preps for metro-area launch

All the indications suggest that Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer, will open its first Mexican store in Guadalajara early next year.

pg5aThe Swedish furniture giant has been promising to take the plunge into the Mexican market for several years, after opening an office in Mexico City in April, 2017.

Ikea is currently recruiting new staff for its “first store in Mexico.” According to the announcements on its Web site, and also on LinkedIn, the employees will be “based in Guadalajara” and must be ready to start at the beginning of 2019.

One senior staff position Ikea is looking to fill in Guadalajara is for a “Country Communication and Interior Design Manager who will lead, develop and inspire [a] service office team.”

Market and distribution studies relating to the establishment of IKEA stores in Mexico have already been carried out, the company confirms.

Ikea was founded in 1943 in Älmhult, Sweden by then-17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad.  The company, which specializes in ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories, currently operates 411 outlets worldwide with annual revenue of around $US40 billion. It has almost 200,000 employees.
