‘Revenge porn’ law passed

The Jalisco Congress has approved new laws regarding the distribution of sexually explicit images or video of individuals without their permission.

The state’s Criminal Code will be modified to include the offense, which will carry a prison term of between six months and six years. The sanction also extends to anyone making a threat to send sexually explicit images.  If the aim of the “extortion” is purely financial gain, the punishment can be increased to nine years, according to legislator Quirino Velázquez, one of the proponents of the law.

The term “revenge porn” generally refers to the uploading of this sexually explicit material to humiliate and intimidate the subject, who has broken off the relationship.
