Airport work begins

Work on the controversial new Mexico City Airport kicked off April 29. The Santa Lucia air base will be transformed into the capital’s second airport at a cost of around $US4 billion.

The airport will replace the partially built Texcoxco airport that was cancelled at the start of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s term last December.  The airport is expected to be finished by 2021 and will be able to handle 20 million passengers.

He has also promised to increase the number of inspectors to monitor excessive noise.
