Zapopan remembers the Holocaust

Zapopan city hall has unveiled a monument to the victims of the Holocaust inspired by the poem “The Butterfly” by Pavel Friendmann.

The sculpture outside the Jalisco State Library was created by Miguel Flores and Lino Ramírez Vite and is an artistic interpretation of one of the chimneys used at the Nazi death camps.

Friendmann was a Jewish Czechoslovak poet who wrote “The Butterfly” in 1942 at the age of 21 while interned at the Theresienstadt concentration camp. It was penned on a piece of thin paper that was discovered after the liberation of Czechoslovakia.
