Even though pro-Catholic, conservative politicians have given it their backing, one of Guadalajara’s most senior religious figures has condemned the national “Day without Women” strike scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, because of its ties to feminist, pro-choice organizations.
During the day-long protest, women are urged to stay away from work and not go shopping or spend any money, in an effort to highlight the growing climate of violence toward women in Mexican society. Organizers of the march, while feminist in origin, say that the motives for the demonstration transcend ideological stances and unite all women, regardless of their social status.
