UdG develops low-cost ventilator

Students and researchers from the University of Guadalajara (UdG) have developed a ventilator that may be used to care for seriously ill Covid-19 patients.

The medical device has been created in tandem with two local companies, PROMEYCO and Atlas NanoTech.

PROMEYCO General Director Enrique Bustos Nuño said once federal authorities have certified the ventilator, between 35 and 50 of the devices could be produced a day, and up to 1,000 a month.

The device uses a system based on automating “ambu-bags,” the pumps often used in ambulances and urgent care,

Bustos Nuño said the Jalisco and Zacatecas health departments have expressed interest in acquiring the ventilators. The devices will cost between 150,000 and 200,000 pesos, around one-fifth the cost of other commercial devices.
