Relatives of inmates at the Puente Grande penitentiary outside Guadalajara say prison authorities are keeping them in the dark about the Covid-19 outbreak that – up until press time – has infected 93 prisoners.
Most visits to the prison have been suspended since the end of March, and relatives allege that many infected inmates are not receiving the medical attention they need. Authorities say few of the infected prisoners are showing symptoms of the virus but all are being isolated. Some relatives dispute this claim, saying they have heard contrasting stories on what is actually happening inside the prison during phone calls to inmates.
