5-month-old baby succumbs to coronavirus

A five-month-old baby boy who tested positive for Covid-19 died in a Guadalajara hospital, the Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) has reported.

The boy, whose parents live in Tonala, passed away at the IMSS Hospital Regional 180 on June 5 after developing symptoms on May 20, a press bulletin said.

This is the first fatality of a child from Covid-19 registered in the state.

The baby had previously been diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism, a condition that may have made the infant more susceptible to the virus, the SSJ said.

Congenital hypothyroidism occurs when a newborn infant is born without the ability to make normal amounts of thyroid hormone. The condition occurs in about one in 3,000 to 4,000 children.

The SSJ did not reveal whether the mother also tested positive for the virus, or if Covid-19 was the primary or a secondary cause of death.

According to the SSJ, 129 children up to 15 years old have tested positive for Covid-19 in Jalisco.  This includes three babies at Guadalajara’s Hospital Materno Infantil or La Máter. Two of the infants have now been released back into their mothers’ care, while the third remains hospitalized.
