Geophysicist to talk via Zoom

The English Book Club of the American Society of Jalisco, along with the Guadalajara Chapter of Democrats Abroad, will sponsor a virtual presentation on volcanos by Dr. William Prescott on Friday, June 26, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

pg6aaaDr. Prescott, a world-class expert on geophysical activity, will give his talk via Zoom.

The book club read Susan Sontag’s “The Volcano Lover” as their May book, which led to their interest in the topic.

The presentation will consist of two parts.  The first half will be on volcanos in general.  The latter part will deal with Dr. Prescott’s personal experience at Mt. St. Helens at the time of the last big eruption in May 1980. He looks forward to taking questions from the group.

Dr. Prescott has a Ph.D. from Stanford in geophysics and has published over 200 peer-reviewed academic papers on the subject. His academic studies were interrupted in 1967 when his student deferment was canceled. Immediately drafted, he spent two years in Vietnam, where he served in an artillery command post. He said that he was able to avoid the infantry because he wore glasses. He is a dual U.S.-Mexico citizen, a resident of Guadalajara, and an active contributor with both Trekmedics and Democrats Abroad.  He holds a variety of volunteer positions in the latter organization at the chapter, national, and international levels. For more information on his life, see https://www.trekmedics.org/get-involved/second-career-volunteer.
