Interjet on brink of bankruptcy

According to various media sources, Mexico’s low-cost carrier Interjet is on the verge of collapse after the airline cancelled flights last weekend and a union representing its workers called for a strike to protest unpaid wages.

More than 3,000 passengers were left stranded on October 31, November 1 and 2, when Interjet suddenly canceled more than 40 flights.  November 3, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) issued an alert on its website urging potential customers not to buy Interjet tickets. Profeco chief Ricardo Sheffield said the company has accumulated more than 1,000 complaints, as well as collective court actions.

Female suicide ‘influencers’ can be charged

In reforms to the Jalisco criminal code, female suicide has been classified as a crime in cases where a woman has taken her life because of previous violence she has been exposed to. Legislator Sofía García Mosqueda said the proof required to prosecute persons considered responsible for a suicide could also include threats made via social media. Prison sentences for guilty parties will range from 3.5 to 11.5 years, and all investigations will be undertaken by the Fiscalía del Estado (Jalisco Attorney General’s Office).

GDL airport sees third-quarter drop

2020 third-quarter international and domestic passenger traffic at the Guadalajara Airport decreased by 53.3 percent compared with 2019, according to the facility’s operators, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP). The fall at the Puerto Vallarta airport was even steeper: 57.3 percent. During the third quarter, total terminal traffic at GAP’s 14 airports (12 in Mexico, two in Jamaica) fell by 6,144,700 passengers, a decrease of 51.8 percent.

Air Canada opens up Mexican vacation options

Air Canada Vacations has announced additional vacation options in Mexico with two additional flights from Calgary, as well as others from Vancouver and Winnipeg. As of December 18, Calgary to Puerto Vallarta will operate twice a week on Fridays and Sundays. And as of December 19, Calgary to Cancun will also operate twice a week on Thursdays and Saturdays.
