Downtown parking lot’s $US6 million revamp

The large parking space under the Plaza de Liberacion in the Guadalajara centro historico is set for a major makeover over the coming months.

pg3aAlthough various structural deficiencies have been identified in the underground lot in the past few years, engineers have never considered them a danger to the public.  The plaza is a traditional site for large-scale gatherings, such as concerts, protests, political meetings, fairs, and patriotic celebrations.

Nonetheless, widely circulated rumors that the plaza could be in danger of collapse have gathered steam and deterred some groups, including organizers of a recent gay pride celebration, from holding their gatherings in the plaza.

According to David Zamora, the Jalisco secretary for Infrastructure and Public Works, the foundations of the main parking structure will be reinforced, in addition to fixing water leaks that have damaged plasterwork and corroded steel fixings, updating the electrical infrastructure and installing air extractors.
