Slimmed down Green Squad to check for emissions inspection non-compliers

The Jalisco government is launching a more “flexible” system to check whether vehicles circulating in the Guadalajara metropolitan area have been taken for their obligatory annual emissions evaluation under the Verificación Reponsable (responsible verification) program.

pg5aA new division of inspectors, to be known as the Escuadrón Verde (Green Squad), will hit city streets starting Monday, October 2.

The teams will be comprised of traffic officers (policía vial) from the State Transportation Department (Setrans), backed up by staff from the Emissions Regulation Agency (AIRE) and state Secretariat of the Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet).

In a press release, the state government said employing a larger number of smaller teams “will allow greater coverage that is not possible under the standard operating model.”

These units will be able to set up checkpoints (retenes) in different parts of the city—and on side streets—far more swiftly than under the current system. Up until now, the checkpoints, which are cumbersome and involve a large number of personnel, have only been installed on major avenues.
