US youth organization sprouts in Guadalajara

The western hemisphere’s only Girl Scout troop outside of the 50 U.S. states appears to be going strong in Guadalajara.

pg5aWith their base at AMSOC, the American Society of Jalisco, the troop boasts 16 girl members ranging from tiny to pre-teen, a team of four mom-leaders, including registered leader Amanda Cornejo, and assorted parents.

Cornejo related how, about four years ago, a mother who was working at the U.S. consulate in Guadalajara got things rolling. Then Eliza Osher, who was living in Guadalajara with her husband, got interested on behalf of their daughter Magnolia, who was in Guias de Mexico, a group similar to Girl Scouts, and looking for another option.

Parents of Girl Scouts living outside the United States are often searching for an all-English environment for their kids to fully experience U.S. language and culture. Parents working in the consulate frequently have similar desires.
