New US consulate to open in July

The new United States Consulate General in Guadalajara will open in July, a senior consulate officer said this week.

In a video conference, Consulate Management Officer Justin Bytheway said the US$347 million facility will “improve efficiency, security and comfort in the visa application process and services for American citizens.”

Work on the building, which takes up an extensive space in the upmarket Colonia Monraz neighborhood of Guadalajara, began in May 2019.   The new building will replace the existing consulate in Colonia Americana, which has served as the local U.S. diplomatic mission since the early 1950s.

Bytheway said the new facilities will increase service capacity and reduce procedure waiting times. The consulate’s regional coverage includes the states of Nayarit, Aguascalientes and Colima, in addition to Jalisco.
