A public transport Guadalajara-Chapala bus that was following a local east-to-west route was involved in a highway accident Sunday, May 19 in the vicinity of La Mojonera near the border with Jocotepec, leaving 18 passengers with moderate to severe injuries.
According to witnesses, the small model bus from the Autotransportes Guadalajara-Chapala line rolled over several times before landing on its side across the Ciclovía bicycle track after colliding with a pickup truck that suddenly crossed its path in an attempt to enter a nearby service station.
Since the damage to the pickup was limited to the rear end of the vehicle, the driver managed to leave the scene to avoid detention by police. The truck was later found abandoned on the lateral side road a short distance east of the accident site.
The injured passengers, 13 women and five men, were retrieved by local first responders and taken to several emergency healthcare facilities in Chapala, Jocotepec and Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.
