More than a quarter of a million people traveled to Guadalajara from across Mexico and beyond last week to attend the Luz del Mundo evangelical church’s Holy Convocation, which culminated on August 14 with the Santa Cena (Holy Supper) commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus.
This marks the seventh consecutive year the event has taken place without the church’s spiritual leader, Naasón Joaquín, who is serving a 16-year sentence in the United States for the sexual abuse of minors.
However, the church’s fortunes do not appear to have been significantly impacted by the scandal, according to the church’s press department.
In 2024 and the current year, Luz del Mundo — a denomination that describes itself as the restoration of primitive Christianity — inaugurated 33 new churches across countries, including Colombia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and the United States, as well as several Mexican states. New congregations were also established in Japan and Denmark.
According to the press department, the church’s numbers are growing steadily, with a global following of six million members, although this figure remains unverified.
