The U.S. Department of Justice this week sued to block the Texas law that would allow state police officers the right to arrest people they think may have entered Texas illegally from Mexico.
The move by the Biden administration had been widely expected, given that all immigration operations and proceedings are the purview of federal authorities.
After the lawsuit was filed, several Texas Republicans issued statements vowing to fight the move, contending that they have a constitutional right to protect the “sovereignty” of their state.
