Chapala Democrats Abroad chapter picks up the pace

Fresh from the National Democratic Convention, Tim Whiting, president of the Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad, brought signs, slogans and chants to a raucous meeting at La Nueva Posada last week in a bid to get members fired up for the fall elections.

The chapter is also still committed to their non-partisan registration of voters at Salvador’s Restaurant on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and at the Lake Chapala Society on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Remember, the law has changed,” said Whiting. “To vote in a U.S. election, you must reregister each year – no matter how many times you’ve voted before.”

He continued: “You can also go online to VoteFromAbroad.org. Print the forms, sign, date and email to your registrar noted on your form. Then email or call and ask for verification that you will be receiving your ballot, as requested, by email.”

Democrats have also announced a series of movies to be presented on four consecutive Sundays at the Ajijic home of Suzanne Forrest (Javier Mina 28). Tickets are 100 pesos and on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones. The screenings start at 3 p.m. and include the movie and snacks.

The featured movie for September 30 is “Inside Job,” a comprehensive analysis of the global financial meltdown of 2008.

Episodes one and three of HBO’s hard-hitting series “The Newsroom” will show on October 7 and 14, while “30 Days,” a film about a couple attempting to live on minimum wage for a month, will play on October 21.

Democrats Abroad is also staging events for the televised presidential debates to be aired prior to the general election. They will be held at Salvador’s Restaurant on Wednesday, October 3; Thursday, October 11 (vice presidential debate); Tuesday, October 16 and Monday, October 22.  Donations will be accepted. Salvador’s kitchen will be closed but the cash bar will be open.  All are welcome.
