Local Tea Party has more followers than rival Democrats, member says

A reporter from USA Today will cover October’s meeting of the Lakeside Tea Party, according to Ed Cage, husband of Karen Cage, the group’s president.

Cage said Tea Party members are in high spirits and helping “to get out the vote” for November’s general election.

Despite it being a tough week for Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate is still “within striking distance” of Barack Obama, Cage told the Reporter.

“Obama went into this race a huge favorite. The Democrats could have nominated a potted plant and still have had a chance. It will be difficult but Romney can win. We’re a 7-to-5 underdog but still in the ball game.”

Even with most snowbirds not expected to return for another month, Cage said turnout at monthly meetings has been “decent.” He stressed that the Tea Party/Republicans “have a numerical advantage” over the Democrats in the Lakeside area. “They don’t have anything remotely close to what we have,” Cage said.   Attendance at Tea Party meetings has been as high as 70 and as low as 29, he added.

Cage believes the upcoming debates will be crucial to the outcome of the U.S. presidential election, and that the Republicans need to concentrate all their focus on the 12 key battleground states.

According to Cage, Obama will come unstuck because his economic policies will be revealed as disastrous for the oncoming economic crash. In addition, he said many cannot forgive the president for “betraying Israel” and not giving Benjamin Netanyahu the support he wants.

The Lakeside Tea Party meets Tuesday, October 9, 4 p.m. at the Sunrise Restaurant.
