US shutdown forces Consulate to suspend regular lakeside outreach

The United States Consulate in Guadalajara says it has suspended its next monthly Chapala outreach for consular services “due to the lapse in federal government appropriations.”

Consular officers visit the American Legion Post Seven in Chapala and Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

All passport and notarial services continue to be available at the consulate, the mission reports.

The consulate’s press department is working under restrictions and is unable to provide its normal service to local media.

A message on the  embassy website reads: “All consular services provided at the U.S. Embassy and consulates throughout the country are proceeding as scheduled. Applicants for immigrant and non-immigrant visas should plan on attending their scheduled appointments. Both routine and emergency services to U.S. citizens are available during regular business hours and through the Embassy duty officer. Protection of American citizens abroad remains our primary objective.”
