Sacred Art goes on high at Chapala Cultural Center

An exhibition of sacred art, tied in with nine collateral events, is scheduled for February 14 through March 12 at Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo (CCGG). 

Organized under the auspices of Mosaico Cultural en la Ribera de Chapala, the program labeled “Between Art and Divine Inspiration,” will encompass a display of several antique religious works of art and more than 50 contemporary pieces created in diverse media by two dozen invited artists, along with a variety of music recitals, conferences and guided tours.

The exhibit and extra activities were put together to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara and the 60th anniversary of the Virgin of Zapopan’s first visit to Chapala.

As a social prelude to the cultural program, a gourmet dinner with musical entertainment will be held Friday, February 13, 7 p.m., at the highly touted La Una Restaurant, Marcos Castellanos 4, Ajijic.  The cost of the meal is set at 150 pesos, excluding drinks and raffle tickets for a portrait of the Virgen of Zapopan by local painter Miguel Mora.  Call 766-2072 for menu details and reservations. 

The cocktail opening of the exhibition will take place at the former railway station on Saturday, February 14, 6 p.m., with pianist Antonio Ramírez providing a backdrop of Barroque compositions.

A salon dedicated to the beloved Virgen de Zapopan, Queen of the Lake, opens Sunday, February 15, Noon, complemented by a 

performance of the Orquesta Típica de Chapala, under the baton of Javier Raygoza.

Sacrum Ensamble will offer a recital by three vocalists and a pianist, Tuesday, February 17, 6 p.m.

Doubling up on Wednesday, February 18, Susanna Chávez will lead an introductory workshop on the dying art of gold leaf application, 11 a.m., followed at by a conference on the significance of religious images by Padre Tomás Hijar. 

Camerata Mozaretta will appear in concert Thursday, February 19,  6 p.m.

On Friday, February 20, Padre Rúben López Barajas will give a talk on the Virgin of Zapopan, 11 a.m. The newly formed Orques

ta Típica de Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos,  directed by Emmanuel Miranda, performs on the same date, 6 p.m.

Guided tours aimed at enhancing appreciation for the sacred art works are scheduled for  consecutive Thursdays, February 26, March 5 and March 12, 11 a.m. 

All of the activities held at CCGG are open to the public free of charge. The center’s regular hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday; closed every Monday.
