Ixtlahuacán mayor cuts salary to feed elders

Ixtlahaucán de los Membrillos Mayor Eduardo Cervantes Aguilar has slashed his salary by half to help feed impoverished senior citizens in the community.

At the start of his administration Cervantes earned an official base salary of 44,190 pesos per month. Last February, during a session of the city council, he introduced a proposal to take a 50-percent pay cut and apply the savings to fund meals provided to the elderly through the municipal government’s social assistance dining room program.

The government’s transparency records show that the mayor currently draws a base salary of 10,293.24 pesos every two weeks which after tax deductions translates into a total of 17,282 pesos in monthly take-home pay.
