Ajijic raises a ruckus for the virgin

Ajijic householders and their pets will be rattled by incessant blasts of cohetes (sky rockets) throughout this month as the town’s devout Catholics pay tribute to the Virgin of the Rosary.

Recognized as a symbol of divine guardianship since 1733, the antique figure of Nuestra Señora del Rosario normally resides in the tiny stone chapel on the north side of the plaza.

She is transferred to the San Andrés parish on October 1 for four weeks of special devotions, starting daily at dawn with the customary Mañanitas candlelight procession and prayer service.  Lively festivities mark her return home on the last day of the month.
