Ajijic lets down its hair

Colorful floats seen rolling through Ajijic during the Tuesday, February 26 Carnaval included the one carrying a merry band of dancing harlequins.

Miguel Angel Marquez Gutierrez and Alfredo Torres Romero were awarded 3,000 pesos for the best representation of the traditional Sayaca couple based on their handmade masks, typical outfits and outlandish dancing during the Fat Tuesday parade.

As always, Martes de Carnaval was an occasion to put aside everyday cares and spend the day cutting loose for one last day before the somber season of Lent took hold.  For many Christians, Ash Wednesday (February 27) marked the start of six weeks of penitence before Easter.
