The First Civil Judge of Chapala, Melchor Augusto Gómez Córdova, narrowly escaped death in a drive-by shooting that occurred Friday, August 2 while he was traveling on the Macrolibramiento ring road after leaving his place of work.
According to a report from the Jalisco Attorney General’s office, assailants riding in a white car landed at least eight high-caliber gunshots in the judge’s Jeep as they pulled up parallel to the vehicle and opened fire.
Wounded in his left leg and hand, Gómez managed to drive off the superhighway and reach police headquarters in nearby Tonalá to seek assistance. He was promptly transported to a private hospital for treatment, where doctors reported his condition as stable.
While searching for the perpetrators, investigators assigned to the case will try to ascertain whether the incident was a direct assassination attempt against the judge or rather an auto theft gone wrong.
