Authorities deny attack on Chapala’s state police base

Jalisco police patrols mounted an emergency operation in the early hours of Saturday, September 14, after gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the force’s regional headquarters at Chapala’s Cristiania Park, raising concerns that the facility was under attack.

Jalisco authorities refuted accounts spread on social media and some news outlets suggesting that a convoy of suspected cartel gunmen had targeted the base in a drive-by shooting. According to the official version, the incident was related to the detention of an individual who had been detected nearby after firing shots into the air. He was purportedly caught holding a makeshift pistol and several doses of crystal meth.

While the local government has not issued a statement on the incident, inside sources revealed that state police took part in a series of home searches and revision of suspects during the hours immediately preceding the gunfire report.
