Chapala’s main drag gets a facelift

The Chapala government is tackling repairs of the community’s deteriorated thoroughfares on the basis of most critical need, with a one-block stretch of Avenida Madero qualifying as the latest target.

pg3aThe south-north lane of the main avenue was closed off to traffic between López Cotilla and Degollado on Monday, September 23. Publics Works Department Director Francisco Lucas Perales dispatched a crew to pull up the adoquín paving stones before sending in heavy machinery to dig up the ground in preparation laying down a firm, compacted base.

Once the foundation is finished, the same pavers will be used to resurface the street, with new handicapped-friendly crosswalks to be built at both ends. Work on the project has been going on from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. to reduce the length of time for detouring traffic to the opposite lane.

Lucas said the next streets to undergo repairs will be Manzanillo, Miguel Martínez and Prolongación Lázaro Cárdenas. He indicated that the rehabilitation of Ajijic’s main west-east artery – Ocampo-Constitución – will be resumed within the next two weeks, to be completed before the village fiestas patronales in late November. The controversy over the yellow cement crosswalks previously built at the corner of Aquiles Serdán will be resolved with a different design more in keeping with the style of the town’s traditional cobblestones, he said.
