Virgin of Zapopan’s summer junket on hold

The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into plans for the Virgen de Zapopan’s traditional summer sojourn to Chapala.

Under normal circumstances the beloved icon comes to town on the second Sunday in July, drawing thousands of pilgrims for a colorful prayer fest to seek the Almighty’s favor for a beneficial rainy season and the overall well-being of Lake Chapala.

At press time, ecclesiastical authorities had not decided whether to go ahead with a discreet, scaled-down visit of the Queen of the Lake in order to prevent potential spread of the virus, or rather postpone the typical full-blown religious happening until a later date.
