The development of a small condominium complex set on the hillside above Ajijic’s Villa Nova neighborhood has sparked a debate that highlights the growing pains and environmental issues that are impacting the quality of life in Chapala and other north shore communities.
While many Villa Nova homeowners are principally concerned about detoriation of their streets due to increased traffic and potential damages to nearby properties, local environmental activists are alarmed by the destruction of natural vegetation and scarring of the mountainside caused by the Vista La Montaña project.
The owner of a residence situated directly below the development site is particularly worried about instability of the bare land, that without a strong retaining wall, could collapse and destroy his home.
