Ajijic plaza remodel plan sparks uproar

The Chapala government’s publication of architectural renderings illustrating plans to partially remodel Ajijic’s central plaza has unleashed a tsunami of discontent among both Mexican and foreign citizens.

pg1aThe project essentially entails refurbishing the elevated corridor on the plaza’s north side, running from Calle Colón to the eastern intersection with the pedestrian walkway to Marcos Castellano. Widespread misinterpretations of the eight stark computer-generated drawings posted on the Gobierno de Chapala Facebook site led many to believe that the blueprints include razing the bandstand, tearing out trees and turning the entire square into a sterile public space reminiscent of an inner-city shopping mall.
