Chapala’s lukewarm response to Covid crisis

Although the latest Covid-19 prevention measures implemented January 16 through 31 by Jalisco authorities are similar and even less stringent than those issued in previous months (see page one), many Chapala residents and visitors have balked at compliance.

pg9Despite the recent spike in Covid cases and deaths, local inhabitants – as well as the large number of tourists who flowed into the community last weekend – have showed little inclination to modify behaviors that make them vulnerable to the disease.

As of Saturday morning, the local government dispatched police and civil protection patrols to block off access to boardwalks, plazas, parks and other public spaces where people tend to congregate. On subsequent rounds, officers repeatedly ran off the defiant, with instructions to wear face masks, practice social distancing and sanitize hands when leaving their homes.
