The restoration of Pozo 3, the well that supplies water to most of central Chapala, has been completed, with Mayor Alejandro Aguirre joining staff from the Simapa utility on hand for the public ceremony to open the main valve.
Neighbors of Calle Pedro Moreno applauded as a strong gush of naturally warm thermal water was briefly released at their feet.
According to Aguirre, the new well was drilled to about 175 meters below ground level and is equipped to produce 30 liters of water per second, with the capability to operate efficiently without major maintenance work for at least a decade. He said that testing had shown that the water quality was excellent and free of toxic substances. The project will be completed with the construction of exterior security walls.
