Two fireworks workshops explode in Ciénega region

A stash of gunpowder stored in a house in a built-up area of La Barca, Jalisco exploded this week, killing three people and injuring one.

pg12bThe house and another property were completely destroyed, while three other properties suffered partial damage.

Civil Protection officers evacuated around 80 residents from 30 homes adjacent to the property where the explosion occurred.

The house where the gunpowder was stored was being used as a workshop to manufacture fireworks.

This is the second fatal accident of this kind in the past two weeks in the nine-municipality region of Jalisco east of Lake Chapala known as La Ciénega.

On April 20 in Ayotlán, five people, three of them women, died after a fireworks production workshop exploded. A three-year-old child was also injured.  The property was in a rural zone, but measured only six by ten meters.
