As the 2026-2027 academic year begins this month, upper-level educational institutions in Chapala are reporting rising enrollment numbers.
A prime example is the local Conalep high school, which is set to be at full capacity when classes begin on Monday, August 24. Demand for entry to the new term was so high that a fourth first-semester class was opened, and 30 applicants were regrettably denied admission due to space limitations. The student body has increased from 377 last year to 440 this term.
Conalep is a technical training school offering courses in informatics, electronic systems management and tourism. Studies in drone piloting and aircraft maintenance will be phased out with graduations at the end of the 2026-27 cycle.
The University of Guadalajara (UdeG)- affiliated Preparatoria Regional de Chapala has admitted 100 percent of its first-semester applicants for the 2026-B calendar term. This was possible by opening a new classroom group for 50 students. All first semester students have been attending on-campus orientation sessions this week. Classes begin Monday, August 17.
Other UdeG Prepas in the lakeshore region have been accepting applications for admission to the Calendar 2027-A term that begins next January, in compliance with an August 13 deadline
The local UdeG campus CU-Chapala was able to admit all 155 applicants who took the admissions exam. The study program in highest demand is nursing. Other options include gerontology, robotics, software development, animation and cultural industry management. As of August 12, 67 spaces in those fields were available to applicants not admitted to their primary career path choices.
Mexico’s official 2026-2027 academic calendar for pre-school, primary and secondary levels runs for 185 classroom days from August 31 to July 9. Extended vacation periods include the December 22 to January 5 Christmas break and March 22-April 3 Easter holidays.
