Weighty coin will cost a ton

The Banco de Mexico  has issued a one-kilogram commemorative gold coin that concludes its Independence Bicentennial numismatic program.

With a diameter of around 3.5 inches, the pure gold coin bears the inscription “Independence and Liberty.”

It has a denomination of 200 pesos  and will be sold by banks and coinage dealers in accordance with international gold prices.  Gold traded Monday  at 1,760 dollars (22,476 pesos) an ounce.  A kilo is equivalent to just over 35 ounces.

The face value of gold coins is usually far lower than the actual value of the coin. A nominal face value is assigned to make the coins actual legal tender.
The world’s largest and heaviest gold coin was issued by the Perth Mint in October last year.  The coin weighs more than a ton, is 31 inches wide and more than 4.7 inches thick.  It is worth around 55 million Australian dollars.
