Mexico City mayor continues her outreach for recognition

By the time the 2024 presidential elections roll around, Tapatios should be more than well acquainted with Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, one of the favorites for the Morena Party nomination.

pg7cAlthough official campaigning to succeed Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador doesn’t start for more than a year, Sheinbaum is making herself known to voters  in Jalisco, visiting Guadalajara last weekend for the third time in the past six months, to participate in a “Women in Governance” forum organized by the Federation of University Students (FEU) at the University of Guadalajara’s Social Sciences and Humanities Campus (CUSCH).

Sheinbaum followed in the footsteps of former Chilean President and leftist icon Salvador Allende, who 50 years ago gave a speech on the esplanade of the campus and whose auditorium today bears his name.

Alluding to the social and political changes in the five decades that have passed since then, Sheinbaum decried the authoritarianism of past administrations, the imposition of the neoliberal economic model, and the electoral fraud of 1988.
