In historic vote, Mexicans elect their first female president

As most polls predicted, 61-year-old Claudia Sheinbaum swept to a landslide victory in the June 2 election and will become the first female president of Mexico, after taking office on October 1.

pg1bHeading a coalition led by her Morena ruling party (“Let’s Keep Making History”), the left-leaning academic, scientist and former Mexico City mayor obtained 59.75 percent of the vote, according to a National Electoral Institute (INE) tally issued on Thursday,  with 99.9 percent of ballots counted. This puts her more than 30 percentage points ahead of her closest rival, Xóchitl Gálvez of the PRI/PAN/PRD centrist alliance (“Strength and Heart for Mexico”), who garnered 27.45 percent of the vote. The third candidate, Jorge Álvarez of the Citizens Movement, captured 10.31 percent.

On Wednesday, INE began a recount of the actas (vote tallies) from 102,388 of the 170,648 polling stations installed across the nation (60 percent), a procedure determined by law designed to detect any inconstancies. The  INE will declare the final result of the presidential election on Saturday. Turnout was just over 60 percent, INE said.
