Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump held their first official phone call of 2026 on Monday, which both sides described as a “very good conversation.”
The 15-minute discussion mostly focused on shared security challenges, including drug trafficking and combating cartels. Sheinbaum highlighted a 50 percent reduction in fentanyl flow from Mexico to the United States due to bilateral efforts but emphasized that any cooperation must occur with “mutual respect” and without “subordination.”
She firmly ruled out any U.S. military intervention on Mexican soil.
The call followed a separate conversation on January 11, during which U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to toughen Mexico’s strategy against cartels and deliver “tangible results” in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.
