Customs hurdles put medicinal cannabis patients at risk

Jalisco lawmaker Enrique Velázquez González is pushing federal agencies to remove customs obstacles that have kept medicinal cannabis treatments from reaching patients with neurological conditions.

Families say even valid prescriptions are no guarantee, with medications routinely held at the border, disrupting critical care. Velázquez is seeking a legislative initiative that targets Mexico’s health regulator (Cofepris), tax authority (SAT), the National Guard and Congress, to streamline import rules

During the press conference, a caregiver explained how medicinal cannabis treatment has been life-changing for her daughter, who has gone from hundreds of daily seizures to five years crisis-free.
