Jalisco government mulls over drug check patrols

Jalisco’s Health Department is proposing the introduction of anti-doping checks to accompany the nightly Salvando Vidas road block operations to identify drunk drivers.

According to Health Secretary Jaime Gonzalez Alvarez, a new German saliva test can quickly indicate whether a person is under the influence of either cocaine, marijuana or amphetamines.

The drug check is being tested in Mexico City and Gonzalez said the results from the capital would be reviewed to see whether Jalisco will follow suit.

Gonzalez said Salvando Vidas is largely responsible for the reduction in the number of deaths from automobile accidents this year in the state. The total currently stands at 788, 39 less than at the same time last year.
