Ash warnings issued as Volcano of Fire blows

Civil Protection units issued warnings to several towns situated near the Colina volcano after three explosions sent ash and smoke more than two kilometers into the sky Sunday.

Experts in the United States described the explosions as “moderately strong.”

“The extrusion continues to feed the lava flow on the southern flank, but only at low rate,” noted the VolcanoDiscovery website  “The flow moves very slowly, but often generates mostly small rockfalls.

According to Jalisco Civil Protection, the Volcano of Fire, as is it also known, has emitted more than 4,800 “exhalations” in 2016.

Located 120 kilometers southwest of Guadalajara on the Jalisco/Colima border, the volcano is one of the most active in Mexico.

When authorities in either Jalisco or Colima issue ash warnings, citizens are advised to refrain from activities in the open air; cover their eyes, noses and mouths; and make sure all doors and windows to their homes are closed.

Around 300,000 people living within 40 kilometers of the volcano, including the residents of Ciudad Guzman, are considered at risk from any increased volcanic activity.
