Governor Sandoval brags about kidney transplant numbers

Jalisco should be proud of its position as the “world leader” in kidney transplants, Governor Aristoteles Sandoval said last week on World Kidney Day, March 9.

According to Sandoval, Jalisco last year carried out 60 kidney transplants per one million of its population, putting this state above the likes of the Netherlands (59) and the United States and Spain (57).

Of the 7,000 kidney transplants performed in Jalisco since 1974, 2,118 have been done in the past four years, during the current administration, Sandoval boasted.  That works out at around 11 surgeries per week since the governor assumed office in March 2013.

Sandoval praised the work carried out by health authorities and medical personnel to provide the support and infrastructure required to make Jalisco a world leader in this area.

Despite the back-slapping, around 3,600 patients in Jalisco are still awaiting a kidney transplant, according to data from the Consejo Estatal de Trasplantes de Órganos y Tejidos (State Transplant Council).
