Airbnb renters to pay three percent tax

Jalisco Tourism Secretary Enrique Ramos is supporting moves to make private citizens who rent out rooms, apartments or homes through the website airbnb.com to pay the three-percent state hospitality tax, as do hotels and other established businesses offering accommodation to visitors.

The Jalisco Finance Secretariat is currently in the process of identifying all those who advertise properties in the state on the popular website, Ramos said.  He added that he was not opposed to airbnb in principle, but believes the service currently amounts to “unfair” competition to established businesses.

Ramos calculated that airbnb properties now total between eight and ten percent of all accommodation available in Jalisco, principally in Guadalajara, the Lake Chapala area, Puerto Vallarta and the Costalegre.
