Up, up and away: Balloon festival coming to Cajititlan

The sky over Cajititlan will be crowded with inflatable objects of all shapes and sizes the weekend of May 5-7, as the town pays host to a balloon festival just east of the town’s namesake lake.

The event is inspired by one event that has been taking place in Leon, Guanajuato since 2002.  In fact, GDL Air, the festival’s organizers in Cajititlan, have availed themselves of their more experienced counterparts to the northeast in order to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch.

According to Eduardo Herrera Grimaldo, GDL Air’s director general, spectators will enjoy the sight of 45 hot-air balloons and two zeppelins, a massive armada that will menace the air all weekend long above Rancho El Atorón, a large horse ranch located about five kilometers east of town along Carretera Cajititlan.

Approximately 250,000 people are expected to attend this celebration of gravity-defying rotundity, and organizers are confident festival-goers will have their gustatory and habitational needs thoroughly met.

In addition to the airborne visuals, there will be live music and a VIP area.   Cost is 100 pesos, 250 if you also wish to reserve a camping space.

Cajititlan is a 35-minute drive from Chapala and 45 minutes from Guadalajara. Those coming from lakeside should turn off the Guadalajara highway about six kilometers prior to the city airport.
