Large sinkhole closes highway to Saltillo

A large sinkhole has resulted in the closure of the highway to Saltillo in Zapopan’s Colonia Villa de Guadalupe.

Authorities indicate that, while it measures five meters in diameter (and eight in depth), a diameter of 15 meters has been compromised by the sinkhole.

It hasn’t yet been ascertained what caused the appearance of the massive cavity, but pointing a finger at the seasonal rains which have begun to waterlog the metropolitan area would hardly be out of the question.

The highway to Saltillo has been closed in both directions, with a detour created on Casiano Torres which takes drivers to Pablo Hipolito Hernandez, at which point they can get back on the highway.

As of press time Thursday, state authorities estimated that the highway could be reopened by Friday, although they said heavy rainfall continued to impede their labors.
