State appoints woman to advocate for elders

Jalisco has a new ambassador for senior citizens. Elisa Gómez Muñoz, 65, of Tonala, took up the mantle after winning municipal, regional and state elections for the post.

pg3bShe will be involved with the state’s Family Development Agency (DIF) and the Secetariat of Social Assistance as a promotor of and spokesperson for pro-senior efforts.

“Mainly, I want to ensure that no senior citizen lacks the essential food and medical care from the government,” said Gómez.

Governor Enrique Alfaro, who headed the event that crowned Gómez in the Degollado Theatre August 9, said he wants Jalisco to be the first Latin American entity recognized by the World Health Organization as a State Friend to senior citizens. “Finding conditions to dignify our seniors is an ethical responsibility of this government,” he proclaimed.
